About Melanie Thornton

Photo of MelanieMelanie Thornton brings a unique perspective to the field of interpretation. She has over 12 years of experience as a counselor, educator, and advocate for people with disabilities. During the five years that she worked as a park interpreter at Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park she began to see how she could combine these experiences to benefit the field of interpretation and ultimately visitors with disabilities who visit our parks and museums. Throughout her career she has embraced diversity and is committed to educating others to implement practices that are inclusive of people with disabilities, and language and cultural minorities. Melanie received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas and her Master's degree in Counseling from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and is fluent in American Sign Language.
